Despicable Me Review

"It's so fluffy I'm gonna DIE!" - Agnes (Despicable Me)

Villainy has never been this cute. Of course most villains don't adopt three sweet little girls to help do their evil bidding either. This animated original that has been a hot ticket at the box-office takes it's place as possibly the 'baddest' - in the 'goodest' sense of the word - animated film of the year so far. Not too 'bad' either considering the number of proven animated powerhouse sequels that have already hit theaters.

As if to prove to the world that originality trumps all, 'Despicable Me' is racing up the charts toward a potential takedown of the money-making animated giants 'Shrek: Forever After' and 'Toy Story 3' as this years best family film. I'm torn between this movie and 'How to Train Your Dragon' as my animated favorites up to this point in 2010.

The storyline -possibly the weakest part of the film- focuses on Gru, a self-proclaimed Super Villain with aspirations of being the greatest of all villains, voiced by Steve Carrell. Gru's career is mared by feelings of inadequacy and underachievment and his plan to steal the moon becomes the plotline for the movie.

Steve Carrell's broken-english lends itself to Gru's endearing character and the minions are cute and hilarious as they carry out Gru's world-domination plans. The 3 little girls have their moments too...Agnes' obsession with unicorns makes for some good laughs.

Some personal favorite moments include Gru's pep-talk to the minions and his re-cap of 2009's thefts, "We had a pretty good year, we stole the New York Time's Square jumbotron!".

A great aspect of the overall quality of the movie comes from the music, a combination of Hip-Hop Soul and Symphony collaborated by Pharrell Williams and Hans Zimmer. The original score and new Pharrell songs written specifically for the movie make it hip and fun. Two thumbs up for the music.

Overall the experience was heart-warming, funny, and original. A movie I would recommend for all families. Kids will laugh more than adults but adults will find this movie very enjoyable in their own way.

Running Time: 95 mins
Genre: Family, Comedy, Animation

Overall Rating= 81/100 stars
